Hello and happy Memorial Day weekend! I wanted to pop in and share good news on how I’ve been doing with weight loss.
I’ve finished my fourth week on Weight Watchers and have lost 7.4 pounds! But the best thing is that my running shorts fit! My clothes in general are looser. I’m thrilled that I’ve seen such great results in just four weeks.
While counting points again (and eating less) was hard at first, it got a lot easier. My daily points target is 30, but I usually go over my target and eat about 35 points a day. I also eat a little more on weekends (40-45 points). I’m really happy that I’ve been able to be successful at losing weight with eating this much.
It’s funny because I’ve added back in foods I restricted when I tried to lose weight on my own earlier this year. My favorite guilty food is bread. My philosophy is that a life without bread is not a life worth living. So when I tried reducing my carbs and increasing my protein, I was pretty miserable. Now, I’m eating my very favorite food—pretzel bagels and vegan cream cheese from Trader Joe’s—about 4 or 5 days a week! I’m also back to eating pretzels and nuts as snacks. And most days I have one small sweet treat, usually a Larabar Bite or a small piece of BarkThin dark chocolate. When I was trying to lose weight on my own, I tried to cut out all sugar and snacks, and it was really tough. I knew it would be unsustainable for the long term. So, I’m thrilled that I’m eating what I love and still able to lose weight.
One thing that’s helped me is having go-to low-points meals to balance out more eating on weekends, like these:
- Large bowl of either steamed or raw kale and a low-points dressing or gravy. Kale fills me up more than anything.
- Boca vegan veggie burger. I don’t usually like to buy fake meat, but these are just 1 point (the homemade ones I typically make are 3).
- “Cheater” veggie soup. It’s cheating because it’s not really making soup. I just make some veg broth from a bullion cube then add some minced garlic and fresh spinach until it’s wilted. It’s quick, filling, good, and 0 points.
I’ve also lost my desire to eat mindlessly, without regard to portion sizes. Now that I’ve seen that I’m completely satisfied on the portions I’m eating, it seems really excessive to eat more. As an example, another snack I really like is sesame sticks, but they’re pretty high in points. Fifteen sesame sticks (a small handful) are 3 points! So one day when I saw a coworker with a big bag of sesame sticks eating them by the handful, I was horrified. He probably ate a day’s worth of points in five minutes!
Right now I’m sitting at the very top of my healthy-weight range according to Weight Watchers; this range is essentially the BMI range. Per the BMI range, I need to lose one more pound to get into the “normal” range. My original WW goal weight was in the middle of my healthy-weight range. I know that I’ll be setting a new goal weight that’s higher than my original (to be determined based on how my clothes fit), but I’d like to get a bit closer to the middle of the range. But, more importantly, while my running shorts fit, I ran in them for the first time this week and was not entirely comfortable. I think I need to lean down a bit more to be comfortable running in them. I think one more month of Weight Watchers will do the trick and get me where I want to be. I’m also feeling confident about maintenance because I’ve been eating more than what WW tells me to and still losing, and I’ll be able to eat even more once I start maintenance.
And with this weight loss comes a renewed interest in activewear! I wasn’t interested in buying activewear when I was heavier because I refused to buy a bigger size and nothing at my regular sizes fit me. To celebrate doing so well, I bought a new pair of Tracker running shorts from Lululemon, Go Longer running shorts from Skirt Sports, and some stuff from Athleta. I’ll be doing reviews of these, but here’s a look at the Lulu shorts I got. I absolutely love ferns and love this Kindred Spirit print. This might be my all-time favorite print!
Hope you’re all having a good start to the long weekend! I’ll be back tomorrow or Monday to tell you what’s next for me–I’ll give you the hint that it’s not anything I’ve talked about in a long time but I’m super excited about it!
